Passive Voice

  • Passive Voice

  • Active voice is used when the subject is the focus of a sentence.
    In active voice, the subject performs the action.
    subject + verb + object
    -Amy signed the rental agreement.
    (Amy performs the action 'signed.')

    Passive voice is used when the object is the focus of a sentence.
    In passive voice, the subject receives (or is affected by) the action.
    subject + be past participle + by phrase
    -The rental agreement was signed by Amy.
    (The rental agreement receives the action 'signed'.)

  • *Remember! In passive voice, the subject and the object trade positions in the sentence.
