Passive Voice

  • Passive Voice

  • We use passive voice when the focus of a sentence is on the object of a sentence and not the action. In passive voice, the receiver of the action (the direct object*) is the subject of the sentence.

subject + be + past participle
-The packages are delivered at 9 AM every morning.
(The packages receive the action 'delivered'.)

  • Mail is sent at the post office.
    Sushi is eaten in Japan.
The packages are wrapped in silver paper. The floors are washed every day.
  • *Remember! Verbs can be transitive or intransitive.
Intransitive verbs do not have a direct object. Because the passive voice focuses on the object of a sentence, ALL verbs in the passive voice are transitive.
