• Most sentences use active voice.  In active voice, the subject of the sentence performs or does the action of the verb.*

  
  

  In the passive voice, the subject of the sentence receives or is affected by the action. 

  
  

  Active: The dog chases the ball. 

  (The dog performs the action 'chases'.)
  

  Passive: The ball is chased by the dog. 

  (The ball receives the action 'chases'.)
