Second Conditional

  • Second Conditional

  • You can also use the second conditional for advice or opinions.  A common expression is "If I were you..."  This shows what you would do if you were in the same situation.

    If were, would + base verb
    -Should I go to China or Italy on vacation?
    -If I were you, I would go to Italy. (Advice)

    -Chris is going to China on vacation.
    -If I were him, I'd* go to Italy. (Opinion)

    *Remember! The contraction form of would is 'd.
    would = I'd

  • If were you, I would tell the police the truth.If were the judge, I would send him to prison.
    If were Jack, I'd apply for the job in Tokyo.I'd buy the red dress if I were you.*
  • *Remember! You don't need a comma (,) if would comes before "if I were".
