Third Conditional (in english language)

  • Third Conditional

  • Use the third conditional for impossible situations in the past. You can also use the third conditional for regrets about past actions.

If + past perfect, + would/could have past participle
-If she had studied more, she would have passed the exam.
(This shows an impossible situation because she can't study more.  She already took the exam.)

-If I had studied more, I would have passed the exam.
(This shows regret because the person is upset they didn't study more and failed the exam.)

If you had called the restaurant earlier, you could have gotten a reservation.
He could have won the lottery if he had bought a ticket.
  • *Remember! You don't need a comma (,) if would/could have comes first in the sentence.
