Second Conditional (in english language)

  • First Conditional

  • Use the first conditional for real-life situations that could happen in the future. The first conditional talks about possible results that will likely happen.

    If + present simplewill + base verb*
    -If it rains, I will stay home. 

    You can also use canmust, or an imperative with the first conditional.
  • If + present simplecan/must + base verb*
    -If it rains, you can stay home. / If it rains, you must stay home.
  • If + present simpleimperative*
    -If it rainsstay home.

    • If you finish your homework, you can go to the party.
    If someone breaks into our house, call the police.You must eat vegetables if you want to be healthy.
  • *Remember! You can reverse all first conditional forms and use the second verb (will, can, must, imperative) first.
    will stay home if it rains./You can stay home if it rains./You must stay home if it rains./Stay home if it rains.
