Perfect Modals

  • Perfect Modals 

  • Use perfect modals for feelings about past actions/events.
    Perfect modals take a modal verb and pair it with present perfect tense. (have + past participle)

    subject + modal verb + have + past participle
    - She should have gone to a different university.

    Be careful! Do NOT use has with perfect modals.
    -S̶h̶e̶ s̶h̶o̶u̶l̶d̶ h̶a̶s̶ g̶o̶n̶e̶ t̶o̶ a̶ d̶i̶f̶f̶e̶r̶e̶n̶t̶ u̶n̶i̶v̶e̶r̶s̶i̶t̶y̶.
                                                                                                                       
    Use perfect modals to talk about:
  • should have listened to my academic advisor.
    She may have gone to the library./She might have gone to the library.
    You could have done much better this semester.
    They would have loved the concert on the quad.
    You must have seen them come into the dorm.
