Gerunds in English

• A gerund is a verb that acts as a noun in a sentence.  

  The form for gerunds is: base verb + -ing

  play + -ing = playing
  

  
  

  Use a gerund as the object of a sentence after some verbs.  Common verbs with gerunds are enjoy, avoid, recommend, and suggest.  

  
  

  Subject + verb + gerund

• I really enjoy watching the sunset.	I avoid drinking coffee late at night.
  Peter recommends running as a morning exercise.	I suggest visiting Spain for a summer vacation.
