Modal Verbs: Shall
- Shall is a modal verb that has two main uses:1. A formal version of will for future plans/intentions-I will move in next week. > I shall* move in next week.2. Obligations (most often used in legal documents)-Tenants shall pay their rent by the 20th of each month.*Be careful! Only use shall with the pronouns I or we in active voice. Use will with all other pronouns.

Will (Active) Shall (Active) Passive I will paint the roof. We will paint the roof.I shall paint the roof. We shall paint the roof.The roof will be painted. The roof shall be painted.They will do garden work. (cannot use 'shall' with 'them') The garden work will be done. - Remember! The contraction form of will and shall is the same ('ll).I'll paint the roof. > I will paint the roof./I shall paint the roof.
