Tag Questions
- Tag questions are short questions that speakers ask at the end of a statement. We use tag questions for two reasons:1. To confirm or get agreement about information2. To encourage someone to make small talk with you
A tag question with a rising tone at the end shows the speaker wants to confirm the information. Your name is John, isn't it? ↑ (The speaker isn't sure about this information and wants John to confirm his name.)A tag question with a falling tone at the end shows the speaker wants the listener to agree. It's a beautiful day, isn't it? ↓ (The speaker knows it's a beautiful day. They want the listener to agree and make small talk.)- Remember! Use a comma (,) to separate the main sentence from the tag question.
