Reflexive Pronouns

  • Reflexive Pronouns

  • Use reflexive pronouns when the subject and the object of a verb are the same. In these sentences, replace the object of the sentence with a reflexive pronoun.

-Jane looks at herself in the mirror.
(Jane = subject, herself = object)

Use by with a reflexive pronoun to mean 'alone'.
-Jane eats lunch by herself. = Jane eats lunch  alone.
  • I make myself breakfast every morning.
John is single. He lives by himself.
We enjoyed ourselves on our date.
Sam and Jack built a house by themselves.
  • Be careful! You can use themselves for plural and singular 'they'.  Another option for singular 'they' is themself.
