Irregular Adverbs of Manner

  • Adverbs that do not follow the -ly rule are irregular adverbs. Most irregular adverbs do not change form. 

    Some common irregular adverbs are:
    good well           late >late*
    fast fast             hard >hard*

  • *Be careful! Some adverbs look like the -ly form of an adjective, but they have a different meaning.
    Lately is an adverb, but it is different from the adjective late. It means recently.
    -I have not seen him lately. > I have not seen him recently.
    Hardly is also an adverb, but it is different from the adjective hard. It means not often.
    -I hardly see him. > I do not see him often
