  • Degrees of Certainty (Modals)

  • Common modal verbs that show degrees of certainty are:
    -will (certain)
    -may (less certain)
    -might (not certain)

    will/may/might + base verb

    Bob may visit Sweden next year.
    Anne is absent today. She mightbe sick.
  • Sarah will eat lasagna when she is in Italy.
    He may not pass the English test.*
    Joe may travel overseas for work.might have to work late tonight.
  • *Remember! Add not after a modal verb for a negative sentence.
    will not be at work tomorrow.  I'm going on vacation.
