Degrees of Certainty (Adverbs)

  • Degrees of Certainty (Adverbs)

  • Common adverbs that show degrees of certainty are:
    -definitely (certain)
    -probably (less certain)
    -possibly (not certain)

    definitely/probably/possibly + verb
    be verb + definitely/probably/possibly

    She probably broke her arm.
    Her arm is probably broken.

    His car was probably expensive.
    will definitely move abroad next year.*
    Culture shock possibly causes depression.
  • *Remember! You can also use adverbs with modals to reinforce a degree of certainty.
    Sam will definitely pass the test. (Very certain)
